Form i9 | Meaning and Definition

What is Form i9? 

Form i-9, also known as Employment Eligibility Verification, states an individual’s eligibility whether he can work in the U.S. or not. Immigration Reform and Control Act enactment needs the employers, with the help of form i-9 state whether the individual is eligible to get employment. 

Who should fill out Form i9? 

After the employment, the new employers have to fill out form i-9. The new employees must submit the required documents to confirm that they are eligible for employment and prove their identity. The documents should be property-checked and verified by the employers of the company. The new employees in the organization must submit form i-9 along with the required documents on the very first day of their employment. 

Documents in the list A for identity and employment eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizenship Certificate (Forms N-560 or N-561)
  • Temporary Resident Card that must be unexpired (Form I-688)
  • U.S. Passport
  • Certificate of Naturalization (Forms N-550 or Forms N-570)

Documents in the list B for identity: 

  • ID Card of school with a photograph 
  • U.S. Military or draft card
  • Driver’s License or ID Card which has been issued by federal, state, or local government entities or agencies
  • Voter Registration Card

Documents in the list C for employment eligibility:

  • U.S. Citizen ID Card (Form I-197)
  • U.S. Social Security which Social Security Administration should have issued
  • Original Birth Certificate 
  • Certification of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State (Forms FS-545 or Forms DS-1350)
