Horizontal Organization | Meaning and Definition

What is a horizontal organization?

A horizontal organization, also known as a flat organization or a flat hierarchy, is one in which there are few or no layers of intermediary managers between employees and executives. The structure of the allocation of units and positions inside an organization’s structure, as well as the nature of the interactions between those units and roles, is referred to as the structure. The number of levels of management and the amount of control given to managers distinguishes tall and flat companies.

Procedures typically are the process of transitioning from a highly hierarchical to a flat organization.

Horizontal Structure

The number of people closely overseen by each manager in a flat organization is enormous, whereas the number of persons in the command chain above each individual is modest. As more people directly under them are reliant on guidance, assistance, and support, a manager in a flat organization has more duties than a manager largely. Furthermore, since the number of superiors above management is restricted in a flat organization, managers focus less on instruction from superiors.

What is Organizational Structure?

The way you organize your business’s management and decision-making processes to enhance performance and effectiveness is referred to as organizational structure. Every firm faces unique obstacles, so determining the best structure depends on your employees’ characteristics, abilities, and capabilities, as well as the nature of the business you run. The most frequent types of corporate structures are horizontal and vertical organizations. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each might assist you in making the best selection for your business.
