What is summary dismissal?

A summary dismissal of employment (sometimes known as an instant dismissal or summary dismissal) is the instantaneous termination of an employee for gross misconduct. A summary dismissal allows an employee to be fired without warning or payment in lieu of notice.

In the employee handbook and in employment contracts, it’s critical to spell out the reasons for summary dismissal. If these procedures are not done, an employee may claim that they had no cause to believe their activities would lead to their dismissal.
