Workplace bullying | Meaning and Definition

What is workplace bullying?

Workplace bullying is unwanted, repeated, and harmful behavior directed at an employee or group of employees. It can involve words, actions, or even gestures that are intended to intimidate, humiliate, or exclude someone. It can make the workplace a hostile and intimidating environment, leading to poor mental health and job satisfaction.

Bullying is usually carried out by someone who is in a position of power over the victim, such as a manager, supervisor, or team leader.

It can be any of these:

  •   Verbal abuse – Such as yelling, name-calling, or vulgar language
  •   Physical abuse – Pushing, shoving, or hitting
  •   Threats – Either explicit or implied
  •   Humiliation – Public shaming or put-downs
  •   Sabotage – Deliberately withholding information or resources that give you an impossible workload

It affects not just an employee and their feelings but also their families. It may have serious effects on personal life as well.

Consequences of workplace bullying

When workplace bullying occurs, it causes several negative ramifications for both the employee and the company. Victims may experience physical or psychological health problems, including stress, anxiety, and depression. They may also miss work due to illness, be less productive, or leave their jobs altogether. Bullying leads to increased staff turnover and decreased work satisfaction. In addition, the organization may face financial consequences from lawsuits filed by victims of bullying.

To solve workplace bullying in a company, it is important to have related policies that prohibit and condemn bullying behavior and clear out the consequences for violators. It is also important to encourage a positive working environment in the office.
