India approves two coronavirus vaccines for restrictive, emergency use

This is a major relief for India which has the second-highest number of infections in the world, after the US. The Central government plans to vaccinate nearly 30 crore people in the first phase of the drive in the next six to eight months. The vaccine will be first offered to one crore healthcare workers, along with two crore frontline and essential workers and 27 crores elderly, mostly above the age of 50 years with co-morbidities.

The Tech sector continues to be the largest recruiter even amid the pandemic

Tech sectors that are hiring include IT services, internet-enabled services, and software products and services firms. Some of the prominent employers were Accenture India, Amazon, DXC Tech, IBM, Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, Citi, GE, and Vodafone. The report by Xpheno, a specialized staffing firm, revealed that active jobs in December were down 33 percent from 2.70 lakh in November 2020. This is the first time in the quarter the active job count has dropped below the 2 lakh mark, the report pointed out.

Tata Sons overtakes govt as the largest promoter of listed companies

Tata Sons ended the calendar year as the largest promoter of listed companies in the country, ahead of the central government. For the first time in nearly two decades, the government is no longer the largest promoter group on the bourses, thanks to a double-digit decline in the market capitalization of government-owned and promoted companies during the calendar year.

India successfully cultures the UK-variant of coronavirus strain: ICMR

India has successfully cultured the new coronavirus strain, which originated in the UK, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Saturday. In a tweet, the ICMR claimed that no country has yet reported successful isolation and culture of the UK-variant of SARS-CoV-2. Culture is the process by which cells are grown under controlled conditions, generally outside their natural environment.

Air travel between India-UK to resume partially from January 8 with 30 weekly flights

Flights between India and the United Kingdom (UK) will resume from January 8, civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh said on Friday. However, to ensure the stringent following of all protocols, India and UK carriers will be each operating 15 flights per week — that is, 30 flights weekly — to and from four metros cities namely Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
